ESPO welcomes the ports of Montenegro as observer member

The maritime authorities governing the Ports of Montenegro are joining ESPO as an observer member. This follows a decision of the General Assembly of ESPO, who are gathering on 1 June for their General Assembly in Valencia.
“We are very pleased to welcome Montenegro’s Ports as an observer member in ESPO. With this new observer membership, we are closing a missing link in our ESPO port network. Montenegro is preparing itself for accession to the European Union. We are happy that we can already consider its ports as part of the ESPO network. We look forward to the good cooperation and are happy to assist Montenegro’s ports in their preparation to becoming a member of the European Union.” says ESPO Chair, Annaleena Mäkilä.
“Having in mind Montenegrin long maritime tradition and undoubtedly the favorable geographical position of our ports in the Mediterranean Sea, it was our intention to join your organisation and thus become an observer country, as our current status requires. As ESPO is recognised as principal interface between European seaport authorities and European institutions we consider our cooperation in this area could valuably contribute to the harmonisation of standards in the process of Montenegrin path towards the European Union accession. It is my great pleasure to be present here and participate at this important event”, says Tanja Janović, General Director of the Directorate for maritime affairs and inland waterways in ministry of capital investments of Montenegro.
“I am really looking forward to work together with the Ports of Montenegro. I am also eager to get to know the ports in Montenegro which play an undoubtedly important role in the economy of the country as main gateways for its trade and which are important players for the tourism in the region. they are very welcome in ESPO.” adds ESPO’s Secretary General Isabelle Ryckbost.
